Iaido - 居合道

Iaido is about learning to handle the Japanese Sword, the Katana, as well as learning to handle the self.

But what makes Iaido unique?

Iaido wa nukitsuke desu.
(Iaido is draw-attack)

The description above condenses, very precisely the nature of Iaido: to draw the Japanese sword and in the draw attack the opponent.

Iaido is practised alone againt one or more imaginary opponents. Every Iaido form, or Kata, starts with one or more draws against one or more opponents. Thereafter one or more cuts are made against these opponents, and upon conclusion, a stylized shaking-off-the-blood is done, after which the sword is sheathed.

Source: An Introduction to Iaido

Iaido and Kendo are intimately connected with each other and we say that Kendo is a part of Iaido. That which today is generally understood to be Kendo, is a more sporty style, where pairs of contestants don quilted armor, and fight one another for points, using bamboo sticks. This has not always been the case. The word Ken-do, The Way of the Sword, has a much wider meaning than this.

In Iaido, live blades are used whenever possible. Since the blade of the Japanese Katana is an exquisite craft, is razor sharp, and requires thorough maintenance, handling the sword in the context of Iaido is, and always has been, a very serious business. Much for reasons of safety, but also because of the responsability required when wielding a potentially lethal weapon. This seriousness is an essential part of Iaido. The techniques which are part of the Kendo that is practised within the Iaido framework, are designed for use with a real sword. Removing the seriousness surrounding the handling of the sword deprives Iaido and Kendo their soul.

Kensei kensan kai's Iaido

Kensei kensan kai traces its Iaido via Nakayama Hakudo to the founder of Iaido, Hayashizaki Shigenobu. Through this lineage it is natural that Kensei kensan kai's Iaido follows the Muso Shinden Ryu tradition. Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido is today one of the most extant Iaido-koryu, and is practised all over the world.

There is much to write about Iaido. The topics below are some that will be covered on this page. Come back again to read more about Kensei kensan kai and our studying of Iaido.
